Life’s Sunset
Bradford Pear with Black Cherry threaded insert
231 cu in
This urn will hold the cremains of a person up to 6’ 4” tall with a large frame.
The container portion and lid of this urn is made of Bradford Pear. It is a very labor intensive piece that I have textured and used a combination black ink and silver gilding medium. The band of color is airbrushed with aniline wood dyes.
This is in the style of a famous professional woodturner by the name of Nick Agar. Nick taught this technique on bowls around the world.
I was honored to put together a tribute video about Nick for the American Association of Woodturners for the posthumous 2026 Lifetime Member Award. Nick was an incredible teacher and artist that influenced the world of woodturning like no one else has. This was obvious by the many people I interviewed for the video. Through his travels he made friends that felt more like family than just friends.
As I worked on turning and hollowing this piece and found that the wood had no particularly appealing figure or grain, I thought this would be a good one to model after everything that Nick taught but on a vessel instead of a bowl which was his moniker. The color featured on this piece is reminiscent of the colors that Nick used on the inside of his signature “Viking Sunset Bowl.”
Originally I just made this piece in my studio for myself as a remembrance of Nick but, after showing it to several of my woodturning friends I have decided that it would make a wonderful urn for someone who has moved on to the sunset of their life.
As an artist, making urns gives me a special kind of peace. I hope that what I put into these pieces helps to give some comfort and peace to the person grieving the loss of their loved one.
This urn is completely made of wood with no metal or stone parts. It is completely biodegradable.
